Academic Programs
The Bachelor of Science in Games + Simulation provides students with an interdisciplinary plan of study covering all aspects of creating and interpreting games. Games are the liberal arts of the 21st century: the fusion of coding and design, writing and mechanics, usability and creativity. With a focus on making and praxis, the BS in Games + Simulation prepares students for a career or graduate study in game design, development, 3D modeling, creative development, writing or designing, esports and games in other industries, all while encouraging students to take creative risks, to build things, and to think critically about audiences, narratives, and aesthetics
The Games + Simulation Minor is an interdisciplinary approach to game design, development, and art. Students are exposed to game theory and production, and can gain additional experience in specialty areas such as 3D Art and Animation, Writing for Games, or Game Development.
Esports
Esports continues to command a growing presence on Miami’s Oxford campus, where faculty, staff and students formed the first Division I varsity esports team in 2016. Varsity teams competing in League of Legends, Hearthstone and Overwatch games. Miami’s Overwatch team won the 2017 National Association of Collegiate Esports championship. The esports arena is located on the first floor of King Library and partial scholarships for varsity esports are available.
Summer Programs
Each June, Miami University’s Varsity Esports Team presents the annual Esports Summer Camp on the Miami University campus in Oxford, OH. Learn about the world of Esports and compete in nightly camp tournaments to develop skills, meet new friends, and learn about potential careers in Esports, games and marketing. Spend a week living at Miami, just a short walk from King Library, the home of the Varsity Esports Arena and Miami’s Games Lab. Programming includes daily classes on the history, culture and business of Esports, a LAN event every night focusing on a specific genre of games complete with tournaments, daily physical training just like our varsity players, and guest appearances by team members and industry partners. Network, play, and learn in our state-of-the-art facilities from the nationally ranked faculty, staff and students that built the first Division 1 Varsity Esports team.
Everyone is welcome, age 12-18. No level of game knowledge or experience is necessary, but we will have opportunities for talented players to compete against some of our Varsity finest.
